Spring Forward

Easy design moves that welcome in the change of season

Spring, with its budding trees, blooming bulbs and warmer weather, is all about rejuvenation—and not just for Mother Nature. Spring is also the perfect opportunity to say goodbye to winter décor and usher in a fresher, lighter feel.

You don’t need to break the bank, either, when it comes to giving your home a taste of spring. Check out the following six ideas that won’t cost a lot—or take a lot of time.

  1. Do a home edit. Sure, you could rearrange the furniture in your living room, but why not take it one step further and swap smaller pieces as well as accessories from room to room? Chairs, lamps, photos, potted plants and the like are all easy to switch, giving a room a different perspective.

  2. Exchange textiles. While you can still layer and incorporate texture in a room, store the faux fur and cable knit throw blankets until next fall in favor of lighter weight fabrics. Same goes for area rugs—replace wool with jute or sisal.

  3. Incorporate color. Have mostly neutral palettes throughout your home? Add a little pop with an invigorating color. It’s easy to do with accent pieces, throw pillows and area rugs.

  4. Change scents. By spring, cinnamon and evergreen scented candles have run their course. Stow them away in favor of candles with citrus or floral fragrances.

  5. Accessorize with spring branches. Look to your local farmer’s market or your backyard for flowering branches, like pretty yellow forsythia or pink cherry blossoms to dress up a living room side table. Pussy willow, with its silver-gray, fuzzy buds, is also a classic harbinger of spring that looks great as a filler with other cut flowers or by itself in a vase.

  6. Put out the welcome mat. Give your front door some love with a new spring wreath. Visit your favorite home goods store (or crafts store if you’re going to DIY-it), where you’ll find wreaths in everything from hydrangeas and tulips to boxwood and olive leaves. Or, instead of a wreath, consider an over-the-door basket filled with your favorite flowers.
